SourceForge.net Awarded $400,000 in Recognition of Open Source Collaboration
World's Largest Open Source Development and Software Download Site Recipient of Funding From Omidyar Network
FREMONT, CA Jul 14, 2004 SourceForge.net (www.sourceforge.net), an OSDN (a subsidiary of VA Software Corp.) (Nasdaq LNUX) site, and the world's largest collaborative site for cross-platform and Open Source developers, today announced it has received its largest donation ever in support of its Open Source collaborative development initiatives from Omidyar Network, an organization investing based on its core belief that every individual has the power to make a difference.
Founded in 1999, SourceForge.net serves developers and users of all levels working on and downloading all manner of Open Source projects on the site. Its dramatic 67% year-over-year traffic growth represents the increasing adoption of Open Source applications in every size organization. In addition to providing a collaborative, real-time development environment, SourceForge.net is also the first-stop for many end-user developers seeking applications before searching for off-the-shelf proprietary versions or developing the applications entirely in-house.
"SourceForge.net is critical to building and supporting the needs of the Open Source community," said Iqbal Paroo, President and COO of Omidyar Network. "Like Open Source itself, SourceForge.net embraces collaboration, sharing, and transparency as better ways to develop and distribute software. Through this approach, every willing developer has the power to make a difference to the success of Open Source."
SourceForge.net is the most important development community site on the Web today, with over 83,000 active projects and 875,000 registered users building Open Source projects worldwide. The $400,000 donation will be used to increase the speed and efficiency of the site as well as improve the interface.
"We're very pleased to have received this donation," said Patrick McGovern, Director, SourceForge.net. "This will help the site build upon its mission to provide the backbone for Open Source development around the world. Being able to enhance the site with a new interface and hardware upgrades will make the site more accessible to new users and veteran developers alike. Our goal is to continue to provide the collaborative environment that the Open Source movement has been founded on, and this donation enables us to achieve that goal."
SourceForge.net is part of OSDN, a wholly-owned subsidiary of VA Software Corp. (Nasdaq LNUX).
