SourceForge.net Named PayPal ® Star Developer Site at eBay ® Developer Conference
World's largest Open Source development site earns distinction as "PayPal Service to the Community Star Developer"
NEW ORLEANS, LA., June 24, 2004 SourceForge.net (parent company VA Software; NASDAQ: LNUX), the world's largest Open Source collaborative development site, was awarded the eBay Star Developer Award in the PayPal category of Service to the Community yesterday at the 2004 eBay Developer Conference. The eBay Star Developer Awards are presented annually to recognize the talent and dedication of members of the eBay and PayPal Developers Programs.
The Service to the Community Award recognizes developers that work hand-in-hand with the PayPal developer program to improve offerings and site use, represent the needs of the greater developer community, and actively partner with eBay, PayPal and the development community as a whole.
"SourceForge.net has developed an innovative donations program for the more than 82,000 projects hosted on the site," said Dave McClure, director of the PayPal Developer Network. "The PayPal donations system on SourceForge.net is extremely beneficial to the developer community, because most Open Source projects make their software available for free and operate without a direct revenue source. This is an outstanding opportunity for the Open Source community to show their support in a tangible way, and PayPal is proud to be involved with this program."
SourceForge.net launched their donations program in December 2003 to enable the Open Source community give financial support to open source projects hosted on the site.
"We are honored to receive this award in recognition of our project donation system," said Patrick McGovern, director of SourceForge.net. "Open Source project administrators work hard to develop quality software for broad use. The SourceForge.net donations system allows these Open Source developers to receive financial support and community recognition for their countless hours and dedication. Paypal, with its backend API's and fraud detection system, provided us with a powerful solution to deploy the donation service to our 850,000 registered Open Source developers with ease and confidence. "
